why it matters

Climate change poses a significant and escalating threat to the resilience of critical infrastructure, affecting various crucial economic and social aspects: e.g., assets, networks, and systems necessary for the provision of power generation and, transmission, transport and telecommunication networks, water supply, healthcare, and food supply. These impacts are expected to intensify in the coming decades. Consequently, electric utilities face growing pressure to innovate sustainable and cost-efficient strategies to address the immediate and long-term risks associated with climate change.

Decarbonizing transportation, buildings, industry, and the electricity sector demands integrated, polycentric strategies. These approaches should emphasize “placed-based” market transformation and uphold principles of energy justice. This is essential for building a future grid powered by clean energy sources, electrifying various energy services, boosting energy efficiency, and expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Dr. Joe Nyangon is a clean energy executive, electricity market innovation leader, and power and utilities expert. He is the Deputy Director of Partnerships at the U.S. Department of Energy, Washington DC. In this role, he leads key programs that advance energy efficiency, electrification, industrial policy and local economic transformation, while supporting improvement in the U.S. building performance standards, grid infrastructure investment, and market competitiveness. He oversees over $10 billion in investments from the Inflation Reduction Act to U.S. states, territories, tribes, and local governments, along with comprehensive partnerships with national laboratories, utilities, other federal agencies, private sector, energy sector leaders, state energy offices, and local governments to accelerate deployment of federal funding and commercialization-focused results that supercharges a new clean energy economy.
